n the ever-changing fashion industry one may find it hard to keep up, myself included. I tend to always be one New York Fashion Week season late, no matter how many trendy lifestyle and fashionista blogs I consume. In this past decade, there has been nothing but creatives, reinventing the past trends into their very own modernized glamorous versions. Being a makeup artist in the fashion industry I have noticed that it is definitely more than just the 90’s making a comeback. It is crazy to see the evolution of both beauty and fashion and how rapidly it has kept evolving. This leads me to believe that it will be close to impossible for me and any other person to be one step ahead of the trend curve.

Without a doubt, this decade will more than likely be known as the “Youtube or Instagram makeup” generation, this is due to the recent influx of makeup tutorials, how-to’s and a seemingly endless amount of “beauty influencers” posting their daily makeup looks. Obviously, this has entirely to do with the emergence of social media. Although, this is not my favorite style of makeup personally, I cannot deny this is a new wave and keeping your makeup on “fleek” is without a doubt a priority for a vast amount of the population now; from perfectly full and structured brows, to contoured looks so precise one assumes they used stencils, not to mention a highlight that could make a unicorn jealous, men and women are currently obsessed to say the least. Not all is bad with these crazy trends, it has paved the way for a freer and a more accepting community for all.

Let’s be clear, makeup artists have been “contouring and highlighting” for decades prior, we were the first pioneers to pretty much combine every style into one, you know how it is, we need to be a little extra. Even though this decade has generated their own makeup trends that could possibly go down in history, it has not stopped artists from putting a modern twist to classic and iconic beauty looks. We are not the first generation to recreate the classic winged eyeliner and red lip vintage look, but we sure have enhanced it with a complimentary fully “beat” face. The vintage look is probably the biggest recreation that you can find almost any artist doing at some point. Let’s face it the vintage look not only has sex appeal, but has a way of making women and men feel unapologetically empowered. It also uniformly flatters anyone if done properly.

We constantly see high fashion models and their makeup artists starting to recreate iconic looks from the past. Whether it’s for photoshoots, campaigns, or just as they step out into their daily life, the 90’s Supermodel Glamour, has been a big hit in the recent 2000’s.

One of my favorite things about being a makeup artists is that you can transform almost any style and or look. For instance, I took the classic winged eyeliner or “cat eye” and put a radiant modern feel to a classic makeup trend. The cat eye winged liner dates all the way back to Cleopatra. Other than being a world renown boss bitch she was always seen or portrayed with a cat like eyeliner. Fast forward a couple centuries and the winged eyeliner made a comeback.

The image to the right is a classic vintage cat eye that I brought to life with bronzed dewy skin and golden glossy lip, giving me a serious Twiggy vibe. Creating a seamless combination with both hair and makeup I wanted to give her a modern-day vintage glam that was “Twiggy” with a Brigitte Bardot Sex appeal. Mission accomplished if I do say so myself!

Now, on to the important stuff… the products. How does one at home recreate a classic but modern day cat eye? I will tell you most of the products I used to complete this look, as well as a couple at home tricks so you do not end up pulling your hair out while trying to get your liner even.

First Step, skin prep! The Basic Beauty Company skincare has provided samples of their products before their launch date, and I can say I am in LOVE! Make sure to check them out!

Now for the rest of the goods… for both the face and eyes I used all Charlotte Tilbury Makeup. For the foundation, I used a very small amount of Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter, this creates a perfect, dewy, but breathable coverage. I also used the Mini Miracle Eye Wand for her under eyes and the inner corner to correct any discoloration and to also brighten in the inner corner of the eye naturally.  For the perfect highlight and contour I used the FilmStar Bronze & Glow palette in light to medium. Using the bronzer to accentuate her cheekbones and the carefully highlighting parts of skin where light naturally hits to give her that overall radiance. 

If I am trying to accent the look naturally I like to use bronzer in the crease of the eyelids and along the lower lash line, this will give a naturally looking definition to the eye area without it being too overbearing.

For the eyeliner, I used Charlotte Tilbury “Feline Flick” liquid pen. Before I apply the liquid liner, which is very intimidating for non-makeup artists to use, I also smudged a fine line of kohl or pencil liner in the same color into the upper lash line. This is so that I know there will be no gaps when my liquid liner is applied. Once I finished smudging the pencil liner into the upper lash line I then proceeded to use the liquid pen on top, but I first start with the wing on the outer corner.

I used the Credit card technique on the model because I needed a quick application process since we were on the sidewalk in downtown Miami. After getting your perfect angle, connect the wing to the rest of the lash line tracing over that fine line you made with the pencil liner. The pencil liner makes it easier for you to stay close to the lash line so you do not make the top liner too thick! Repeat on the other side, and apply mascara, duuuhhh!

As for the lips, you will not believe that the ONLY product I used is from the Queen herself, Bad Gal RiRi. Her newly launched makeup line, Fenty Beauty makes a whole range of incredible products, but the HOLY GRAIL of all lip products ever created is her lip gloss, Gloss Bomb. If you do not have one in your bathroom, one in every purse, one in your makeup kit, and a spare in the car, like what are you doing!?
